This segment continues from the previous scene, where Ryoko ultimately chooses to free Nagi of Jezibel's influence.  While three events from Nagi's childhood are depicted, the main goal was capturing the emotions in each event:  fear, defiance, betrayal.  Each of these seemed like a feeling with which Ryoko would resonate, giving her an appreciation for Nagi's perspective.

Though Ryoko and Nagi do have a duel at the end, I do not regard this as their definitive clash.  Indeed, Nagi was just then breaking out of Jezibel's sway and, thus, was not at her best.  I plan to have a more clear match between them in a later story.

Much of Ryoko's reflection upon her mother's death and its aftermath drew from my own mother's passing.  I remember feeling like my life had fallen apart, and I was utterly disgusted when family I had trusted came looking for a portion of her life to take for themselves.

The character of Kuis is taken from the later OVA, where she was depicted as a mirror copy of Kamiki Seto.  For reasons that will become clear as the story progresses, I wanted to use an underling of Seto, or Seto herself, as the leader of the Juraian force sent to take Nagi from her father.  I decided on Kuis as her connection to Seto was so intimate, that I figured I could devise a clever play on it later.
